Abstract

This study discusses the motivation of bribers to bribe in corruption cases from a criminology perspective. Bribery is a common form of corruption in Indonesia and has damaged governance and public trust in state institutions. The legal approach that has been used so far is considered insufficient to touch the root of the problem of deviant behavior. Therefore, this study uses a criminology approach to analyze the psychological, sociological, and social environmental factors that drive someone to commit bribery. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with literature studies as the main data collection technique. The analysis was carried out by referring to criminology theories such as differential association, social control, anomie, and neutralization. The results of the study show that the motivation of bribers to bribe is driven by internal and external pressures such as economic pressure, ambition for power, and moral rationalization. This practice has a broad negative impact on national development, including decreasing bureaucratic efficiency, increasing social inequality, damaging the meritocracy system, and decreasing investment and public trust in the government. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the motivation of bribers through a criminology perspective can be the basis for formulating a more effective and sustainable corruption prevention strategy.
